My grandma (who refused to be called grandma) had her boyfriend build her a fireplace in her Yuma home. We didn't need fire in Arizona, not even in the winter.  I remember one Christmas morning, sitting on the hearth because there weren't enough chairs, surrounded by relatives, the rough bricks cutting into my thighs, wondering about the differences between my parents' families. I still wonder at them.
